Music case study

 Jay Taylor - FdA Music

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle College?
I moved to Newcastle from London in 2014. I started off working but wanted to go to college to enhance my career prospects. I knew straight away that I wanted to come to Newcastle College as the course was exactly what I was looking for plus its only 15 minutes away from where I live.

Why did you choose the course?
I have loved music all my life. I started off playing the piano and got to Grade 3 but then I found electronic music and have loved it ever since. There is so much to learn and it is always progressing.

What are the facilities like at the College?
The facilities are amazing at the College. You have studios, software and so much technology and equipment. As a lot of the kit is expensive it’s great that the College have it so you can gain experience before investing in your own.

What do you enjoy most about your course?
I enjoy sharing ideas with other people. I like hearing what others have made and get inspired by their work. Here at the College everyone has a different sound and as we learn in the same building as singers, performers, bands and DJ's, you are constantly surrounded by sounds. All of this can be used to develop your music and that’s what I really enjoy.

Do you like the fact assessment is not all based around exams?
It’s great that assessments aren’t exam-based. The course has a good mix of coursework and practical. The practical side has really helped me with work on my performance.

Has there been any guest lectures from industry?
Yes we have had a few guest lectures from Mark Jenkins from Hot Creations, which is one of the biggest labels for house music in the UK and Chris Cue from Tough luck records. Having speaker come in is really good as it opens your horizons to new ideas, sounds and concepts.

How would you describe the staff at the College?
The College staff are great. They make sure you are on the right track and keep you up to date with all the changes in the industry. They try and nurture you and prepare you for the real industry. The tutors have a lot of experience of the industry and they have a lot of industry links which is great for students as we benefit from these.

What has been your highlight of studying at Newcastle College?
So far my highlight has been getting my hands on the equipment and getting experience. There is so much equipment out there and here we get to learn on so much of it.

What’s Newcastle like as a student city?
Newcastle as a student city is amazing. I’m really into sport and there is always something to go and watch from basketball to football. There is also a buzzing nightlife with plenty bars and clubs, restaurants and shopping.
