Uniformed Public Services case study

David Lee -  FdA Police and Criminal Justice

David tells us why he chose to study at Newcastle College University Centre.

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle College?

After completing the first year of my A- Level studies, I decided the career that I wanted to pursue was in policing. After researching the requirements, I found that a degree was necessary and the modules in the course really stood out to me as I felt they were both relevant and interesting to learn about.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

I enjoy how the course is all practical, engaging and relevant to the industry I want to go into. All of the modules in the policing course covers everything that is necessary for that industry, and knowing the course has been designed specifically for that career path provides me with security, as I know I will be prepared when I go into this sector.

What inspires you?

The future and who I want to be in the future. I want to be the best version of myself, I always want to keep pushing myself to be better. I make sure I am proactive now, so I don’t have any regrets about not pushing myself enough later on.

Has there been any guest lectures from industry?

We go out to visit industry where we can see how they work and learn from their working environment. This provided us with the understanding of how the police force works outside of the classroom. We have also had lecturers from wider fields, such as the marines and the navy, which has been inspiring, especially with the career paths we’d like to pursue in the future.

What’s Newcastle like as a student city?

I have grown up here, but as a student you get to see the different side of it. It’s definitely great and fun, everyone is welcoming, especially for new students, Newcastle is as friendly as you can get.
