Beauty Therapy case study

Gemma Simpson - Level 2 Beauty Therapy

"In the past, I followed the traditional route and studied A-Levels so I could gain a place at university. However, once I had started my degree in Art & Design, I realised that this was not for me and the allure of employment and earning a salary was really appealing. I then discovered I was pregnant, so I chose to put my career on hold to focus on raising my family.

As my children got older, I decided the time was right to re-enter the world of employment. I have always been interested in beauty therapy but didn’t know how I could get the kind of training that would not only get me a job but would give me the skills to run my own beauty salon.

I chose Newcastle College as it was recommended to me by my husband who also studies here. He spoke highly of the college and I saw first-hand how it has benefitted his career. Once I came in to enrol and got a chance to see the facilities at the Lifestyle Academy, I was totally sold. The facilities are fantastic and I knew that I couldn’t find this anywhere else.

I’m really enjoying the course. Aside from the exciting practical work, I’ve been fortunate to be in a group with great people. We support each other during assignments and have a great laugh outside of class. The course tutors have also made a huge difference. Rachel Bickerton has been nothing short of fantastic. She is mindful of our commitments outside of class and she is always making sure that we can cope with the level of work but also keeps tabs on how we’re doing.

I would recommend to anyone to study at Newcastle College. The part-time courses work around you so you can develop your career, work part-time and still not miss out on the family. Studying here was the best decision I ever made."
