Art and Design

Are you a creative individual looking for space to develop your practical skills? Our range of art and design courses allow you to do just that. Choose from fashion, interior design, textiles and more which can all be studied part-time or full-time to fit around your life.


Whether you are looking to pursue your passion or you are taking that first step back into education, you will be fully supported by our industry experienced tutors throughout your studies.

You will learn in our dedicated Mandela Building which includes industry standard facilities such as wood and metal workshops, a screen printing studio with fabric printing facilities and fashion, sewing and textile workshops.

You will also have the opportunity to showcase your work to the public in our gallery spaces and undertake live briefs and projects from employers to get that real-work experience.

What can I study?

Beginners Ceramics (Hand building)

If you want to start learning the art of making by hand in clay, this beginner's hand building ceramics course is perfect for you.

Length: 3 hours per week for 6 weeks

Combine a love of art with practicality whilst creating ceramic pieces unique to you in this beginners' ceramics (throwing) class.

This is an exciting 18 week course where you will hone your skills by responding to a brief and create your own ceramic piece.

What can I do with a qualification in Art and Design?

Daily tasks:

  • Produces works on commission basis for clients.
  • Markets and sells finished work directly to customers.
  • Liaises with writers and publishers to produce book illustrations.
  • Uses artistic skills to restore damaged artworks.
  • Approaches managers of galleries and exhibitions in order to get finished work displayed.
  • Builds up composition into finished work by carving, sculpting, etching, painting, engraving, drawing, etc..
  • Prepares sketches, scale drawings or colour schemes.
  • Selects appropriate materials, medium and method.
  • Onceives and develops ideas and ways of working for artistic composition.

  • Makes alterations to finished garments according to customer.
  • Shapes garment by pressing seams, pleats, etc..
  • Sews garment parts together by hand or machine, makes buttonholes and sews on fasteners and trimmings.
  • Pins/tacks and fits garment on customer or dummy model and makes any necessary alterations.
  • Arranges pattern on correct grain of fabric, marks position and cuts out garment parts with hand shears, electric knife or cutting machine.
  • Examines fabrics or skins for flaws and prepares materials for cutting.
