It will cover a broad range of Engineering activities and disciplines within the sector and forms part of the foundation learning.

Course Content

The course is a 45 credit extended certificate with subjects such as:

  • The Engineered World
  • Investigating an Engineered Product
  • Mathematics for Engineering
  • Electrical and Mechanical Science For Engineering
  • Engineering Design
  • Machining Techniques
  • Health & Safety in Engineering
  • Interpreting and using Engineering Information

You will also follow a programme of study to complement this award including functional skills, Maths and English and Experience of Work.

Progression Opportunities

You may wish to progress onto a Level 3 Diploma in a relevant subject, or undertake a modern apprenticeship scheme within the sector.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs A-D / 9- 3 or equivalent Pass level, including Maths and Science.  If English is not your first language, you will need an English Language test score of 5.0 or above. You will also have to complete the engineering induction programme.

Course Costs

16 to 18s

Learners are eligible for free tuition if they are aged 16-18 when beginning their studies.

If the course being applied for is a two-year qualification, you will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the remainder of the course.

If the course being applied for is two separate one-year qualifications and you begin studying year one of the course aged 18, you will be required to pay fees for the second year.

If you are aged 18 when beginning the course, it is advised that you talk to our Student Services Team on 0191 200 4000 or by email who will be able to explain the options available.

Please note, if you are applying from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland you may be subject to different funding rules than students who live in England.
