Overview

This is a 10 week part time course designed for beginners as an introduction to light vehicle maintenance.

This course runs on the following dates:

Who the course is for

The course is for:

1) Those considering working in the automotive industry.

2) Those with an interest in undertaking basic vehicle maintenance on their own vehicles.

Qualification Gained

If you successfully complete the course, you will gain a Level 1 IMI Award in Personal and Social Development for the Automotive Environment.

Course Content

The course is taught primarily in the workshop. Basic maintenance and care of light vehicles will be taught through three units which facilitate broad development; ‘Dealing with problems in daily llfe’, ‘Developing self’ and ‘Environmental awareness’.

You will be able to carry out simple tasks associated with or be aware of.

• Light vehicle construction and routine maintenance
• Operating principles of light vehicle engines, tyres, brakes, steering and suspension systems
• Operating principles and maintenance of light vehicle transmission systems and electrical and electronic Systems.

It contains the knowledge required to work safely around a vehicle's high & low voltage electrical system and electric drive train system.

Students also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage
 

Learning Methods

You will undertake a mixture of workshop practical activities and classroom sessions. You will be required some times to undertake some essential knowledge based activities outside of the delivered sessions.

Assessment Methods

A range of assessment methods will be used. The assessment methods selected for each unit will be appropriate to its aims, level of work and the learning outcomes to be achieved. The qualification will be delivered with a combination of theory, practical instruction, on-line tests and/or demonstration as well as hands on practical work.

Progression Opportunities

For successful completers, this could lead onto a full time level 1 IMI Diploma course in one of ; Vehicle Accident Body Repair, Transport Maintenance or Vehicle Accident Refinishing Repair.  Apprenticeship routes may also be available

Career Opportunities

This course could be a stepping stone to a career in the automotive industry.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this programme of study.
If english is not your first language candidates will need an English language test score of 5.5 or above.
