This is a specialist course which will help you develop your skills in this design discipline.

Diplomas are an alternate route into higher education or employment and boast a strong industry focus.

Who the course is for

This course is ideal if you are looking for a practical, challenging and career-focussed alternative to A levels.

It is suitable for anyone who would like to progress to Higher Education with a view to pursuing a career in Graphic Design.

Qualification Gained

If you successfully complete the course, you will gain a BTEC Extended Diploma in Art & Design (Graphics).

All students study:

  • Basic Design Skills
  • Design concept work
  • Visualising
  • Design For print
  • Creative Advertising
  • Lettering and typographical design
  • Packaging
  • Illustration
  • Art and design history
  • Computers in art and design
  • Professional practice studies 

Your course also includes GCSE or Functional Skills as appropriate in English and or Maths. Possessing these skills will help you to progress in education, training and employment and make a positive contribution in the community in which you live and work.

As well as GCSE & Functional Skills being embedded into all aspects of your course you will receive a dedicated lesson to enable you to develop your skills in the relevant subject area.

Learning Methods

The course centres on a programme of assignments designed to put your skills to the test.

Teaching is mainly through practical projects, small group work, lectures and private study.

As well as developing your specialist skills you will learn how to research, evaluate and present your ideas clearly, and to solve problems with creativity, adopting a professional approach to your work.

Assessment Methods

You will put together a portfolio of work, evidencing the units of the qualification, which is internally assessed and externally moderated as the course progresses.

Progression Opportunities

You could continue your studies by progressing to a Degree, Foundation Degree or Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design or a related area.

Career Opportunities

Previous students from this course have progressed to careers in Advertising, Marketing, Packaging Design Social Media Management and Print Design.

Entry Requirements

You must have completed your compulsory school education and should have achieved at least one of the following:

  • 5 GCSEs A-C including English and Maths
  • A BTEC First Diploma in Art and Design
  • An Intermediate GNVQ in Art and Design
  • An alternative equivalent qualification at the appropriate level

If English is not your first language you will also need an English Language test score of 5.5 or above. In addition to this, you will also need to bring with you to interview a portfolio of relevant project work.

Course Costs

16 to 18s

Learners are eligible for free tuition if they are aged 16-18 when beginning their studies.

If the course being applied for is a two-year qualification, you will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the remainder of the course.

If the course being applied for is two separate one-year qualifications and you begin studying year one of the course aged 18, you will be required to pay fees for the second year.

If you are aged 18 when beginning the course, it is advised that you talk to our Student Services Team on 0191 200 4000 or by email enquiries@ncl-coll.ac.uk who will be able to explain the options available.

Please note, if you are applying from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland you may be subject to different funding rules than students who live in England.
