This course offers an excellent introduction to a range of beauty therapy skills to enable to be employed in a Beauty salon or progress to a Level 3 Route. You’ll practice what you learn at The Retreat, our commercial beauty salon which simulates a real work environment. You’ll also have the opportunity to undertake visits to beauty exhibitions and attend additional training courses (fees will be incurred). This course may include 9.00 am starts a late night and some Saturdays

Reception duties


Learning Methods

You will learn through a combination of interactive classroom teaching, working in small groups and practical work. During your studies you will work in our modern beauty salons using the latest in beauty therapy equipment.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through practical observation, oral questions, written projects, discussions, presentations and a variety of external online examinations

Please be aware that due to awarding body regulations your finished portfolio must be made available, if requested, up to three years after your course has been completed.

For practical FINAL Assessments all learners are resopnsible for finding, sourcing and providing their own models and these are always in lesson times.

Progression Opportunities

There will be a wide range of progression courses depending on the route taken, including L3 Beauty Therapy or L2 In Make-up Artistry.

Other courses will be available are Gel Application, Acrylic Application, St.Tropez Tanning, Lash Lift and Brow training at an extra cost.

Career Opportunities

Previous students from this course have progressed to jobs in a Beauty Salon, Nail Technician or working as an in-store Beauty Consultant or mobile Beauty Therapist.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSE's graded 3 -9 including maths or English.

Provide at least one satisfactory reference from a previous employer or educational establishment.
• Excellent attendance is required (100% expected, minimum 95% acceptable)
• Must be prepared to study towards GCSE/Functional Skills in Numeracy and Literacy

• If English is not your first language you will require a Level 1 FS or ESOL Skills for Life Level 1 or you do not hold these qualifications you will sit a Vocational English Language Test. 

Full dexterity, good eyesight (with or without contact lens, glasses or other). Students with disabilities will be assessed on an individual basis to confirm their suitability for the course.

Interview with Programme Leader is compulsory

Standard Entrance exam to be passed before accepted onto POS.

Course Costs

16 to 18s

Learners are eligible for free tuition if they are aged 16-18 when beginning their studies.

If the course being applied for is a two-year qualification, you will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the remainder of the course.

If the course being applied for is two separate one-year qualifications and you begin studying year one of the course aged 18, you will be required to pay fees for the second year.

If you are aged 18 when beginning the course, it is advised that you talk to our Student Services Team on 0191 200 4000 or by email who will be able to explain the options available.

Please note, if you are applying from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland you may be subject to different funding rules than students who live in England.
