Want to Work at the World's Biggest Windfarm?

Have you heard that learners at Newcastle College are in prime position to secure jobs at the world’s biggest wind farm?

The Dogger Bank wind farm will be the largest offshore wind farm in the world when it opens in South Shields in 2022 and will generate enough to power 4.5 million homes.

The best bit is that it will create hundreds of jobs for the North East and students enrolling onto a two-year Subsea and Renewable Energy Technologies course at Newcastle College in September will qualify just in time for its opening.

We launched the Level 3 course last year with our partners Port Training Services (PTS), so that we could help young people train for jobs in offshore energy, one of the biggest and most exciting sectors in the North East. It was developed with the help of offshore and energy employers based at Port of Blyth, to make sure we’re teaching all of the skills needed to be a subsea engineer or a wind turbine technician.

35 students enrolled on to the course last year and now we want even more students to join them this September, ready to work at Dogger Bank.

Charlotte Palmer was one of the first students to enrol on the course and she says: “Living in Blyth, I know how big the energy industry is and I know it’s only going to grow. It’s huge for the North East, so this is a great opportunity for me and I can’t wait to start my future in engineering.”

Newcastle College opened its award-winning Energy Academy in 2012. Based in Wallsend, it is home to the world’s most advanced Immersive Hybrid Reality (iHR) offshore wind training facility and trains the next generation of offshore and subsea industry engineers, offering courses and apprenticeships from Level 3 up to foundation degree level.The partnership with Port of Blyth and PTS was formed to develop new training routes into energy, but it means that no matter which energy course you enrol on, you get to benefit from training facilities at the Academy and at the Port.

Last year the government announced that they expect 17,000 new jobs to be created in the energy sector by 2030. Now, with the arrival of Dogger Bank Wind Farm, there has never been a better time to enrol onto an energy course at Newcastle College.
