The unique Sport and Education BA offers you the opportunity to experience and understand the world of teaching. This is the only course of its kind in the North East of England. The course is aimed at those who have a sport or exercise related Foundation Degree (or equivalent) and have an interest in working in the education sector upon graduation. As well as a focus on sports related topics, the course offers a module which will introduce you to the 14+ education sector. As part of this course you’ll be expected to focus your dissertation on an educational issue. You will be able to be involved in research focusing on your chosen field and will have the chance to participate in conferences. In addition, you will be provided with a wide range of opportunities to develop your practice by engaging with events, volunteering and visits to our industry partners.

Who the course is for

The course is for students  who are interested in sport but also would like to learn about education and perhaps progress into that field and  already holding a Foundation Degree (or equivalent) in a sport or exercise related discipline wishing to top-up to a full Honours Degree

Qualification Gained

If you successfully complete the (Top-Up) degree you will be awarded a BA (Hons) Sport and Education (Top-Up) by NCG.

Course Content

Year one 

Introduction to Teaching, Learning and Assessing in Sport and Exercise
This module will help you to adopt an integrative approach to the theory and practice of teaching/training and tutoring of sport and exercise and to develop communication and interpersonal skills to aid subject delivery.

Research Methods 3
This module will provide you with the skills needed to design, collect and analyse data in both the qualitative and quantitative paradigms and will develop your critical thinking skills

Current Developments and Best Practice
This module will enable you to understand how current thinking and research in your vocational field can influence best practice

Researching a Professional Environment
The focus of this module is learning through conducting primary research. You will develop skills in research and analysis through independent study of a related subject of your choice.

Optional module:

Applied Psychological Support: this module will provide you with an understanding of the use of psychological support in the field of exercise and performance sports.

Applied Physiological Support: This module will help you to develop the laboratory and theoretical skills required to assess performers and to appreciate the applications and limitations of a range of physiological testing protocols when working to enhance the performance of this athlete.

Sport and Exercise Business Enterprise: This module will provide you with the skills and knowledge to be able to enter the sports industry market and work towards the creation of their own enterprise).


Learning Methods

You will learn through a range of methods including lectures and seminars where the theory is related to current industry practice e.g. through the use of case studies particularly related to sports education.

You will also participate in lectures, group work and self-directed study. You will be given opportunities to present group work to your peers developing skills in public speaking and increasing self-confidence.

Assessment Methods

Specific methods of assessment will include reports, portfolios, practical assessment, teaching assessment, work based case studies, reflective journals, video assessments, presentations and a dissertation.

Progression Opportunities

There is the opportunity to undertake further training through a PGCE for those wishing to obtain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Career Opportunities

Our graduates have secured places on primary, secondary and post 14+ PGCE programmes. Other career paths may include sports coaching or sports development work.


Entry Requirements

A relevant Foundation Degree or the Level 5 equivalent (HND, Diploma in Higher Education).
Applicants are normally expected to have achieved grade C in GCSE Maths & English Language or the Level 2 equivalents.

Mature students (age 21) will be considered only on the basis of relevant industry experience.
Applicants for whom English Language is not their first language are expected to achieve a minimum IELTS Score of 6.0 or the nationally recognised equivalent.

A satisfactory DBS clearance will be required to undertake this programme and must be obtained within the first term of enrolment.

Course Costs

Higher Education courses

Newcastle College’s tuition fee for full-time undergraduate UK and EU students studying a degree starting in 2019 is £9,000 per year. Students can choose to pay their tuition fees upfront or take out a Tuition Fee Loan from the Student Loans Company, which currently defers payment until individuals earn over £25,000 per year after graduation. Students can apply for student finance by registering their details at or alternatively they can apply for student finance on their UCAS application form.
