A former Newcastle College University Centre student has been named Young Chef of the Year.
Phillip Ho, who graduated with an FdA in Culinary Arts in 2022 was named winner of the Delifresh Young Chef of the Year competition at the national final in early November.
Eight regional finalists attended the live cook-off at St James’ Park in Newcastle to decide who would be crowned this year’s winner.
22-year-old Phillip, who now works at Craving Asian, was a finalist in both 2022 and 2023, and this year went all the way to bring home the title.
The competition was created by food service supplier Delifresh to showcase young talent. Open to all trainee and professional chefs under the age of 25, the dishes are judged by an expert judging panel made up of industry legends.
Phillip said: “Since it’s the third time I’ve entered, I felt confident and comfortable in that environment. This experience gave me the opportunity to create dishes that I can proudly say are completely my own. Winning was incredibly fulfilling. Seeing my friends and family watching me cook and then heading up on stage for the results made me very happy and proud of how far I’ve come.”
A representative from Delifresh said: “The passion and determination from Phillip is something that inspires us all, coming back stronger and stronger every year.”
