Overview

This programme of study is an introductory vocational programme for those people wanting to work in the vocational area of sport and exercise.  It is designed to progress learners onto a level 3 programme within sport and exercise.

Who the course is for

16-18 year olds who are wanting to work in the sport and fitness industry.

This course is over 1 year and after the first year you will gain a NCFE Level 2 Diploma in Sport that is worth 42 credits.
 

Qualification Gained

NCFE Level 2 Diploma in Sport. There may be an opportunity to take other vocational awards such as external coaching qualifications.

Course Content

The mandatory units to be covered are:
• Understanding business in sport
• Participating in sport
• Preparing to work in the sport and leisure industry


In addition you will have to choose a certain number of units from the following list to make up the remaining credits :

• Factors Affecting Participation in Sport and Physical Activity
• Sports Coaching
• Planning and running a sports event
• Plan, deliver and evaluate an activity session

There will be projects where you will be using a Realistic Working Environment (RWE) in order to gain skills required by the sports industry. You will also be required to work towards a GCSE grade C in maths and English if you don’t already have one

 

Learning Methods

You will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, practicals and work related projects and experiences.

You will be assessed through a combination of:
• Presentations
• Reports
• External tests
• Vocational work related projects
• Written assessments
• Practical demonstrations
• English and Mathematics exams

Progression Opportunities

It is envisaged that students achieving a merit profile or better will progress to the two year BTEC L3 Diploma in Sport or UPS at Newcastle College.

Entry Requirements

You will need a minimum of 4 Ds at GCSE (including English or maths) or have passed the Level 1 Award/Certificate/Diploma in Sport and Level 1 English and maths, with a suitable reference from your tutor.

Course Costs

16 to 18s

Learners are eligible for free tuition if they are aged 16-18 when beginning their studies.

If the course being applied for is a two-year qualification, you will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the remainder of the course.

If the course being applied for is two separate one-year qualifications and you begin studying year one of the course aged 18, you will be required to pay fees for the second year.

Please note, if you are applying from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland you may be subject to different funding rules than students who live in England.
