This course is ideal for those with a basic understanding of the techniques and processes used in either digital or film photography, who wish to develop their skills and expand their subject knowledge.


The course will introduce students to both practical and theoretical aspects important in the creation of great images. The course will run for 17 weeks on Monday 5pm – 9pm.

The course is aimed at learners who wish to study part-time to develop practical and theoretical skills in Photography.

Course Content

The course will cover the following three units:

  • Explore photographic equipment, techniques, materials and resources
  • Develop and adapt ideas creatively in photography
  • Produce and evaluate photographic images


Learning Methods


This course is delivered within a class/studio environment; learning will take the structure of a presentation by the lecturer, a related learner activity and then a review process to assess learning before moving on to the next process/task.


Tutors will support progress and give appropriate feedback/guidance. On-line materials will support course delivery.


Assessment Methods

The qualification is assessed by continuous practical assessment via the collection of coursework, assessed against unit outcomes.

Progression Opportunities

This course may offer progression to:

  • UAL Certificate in Photography
  • BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Art and Design
  • Foundation Degree Photography


Career Opportunities

This course can be a first step towards a variety of professions in Photography.

Entry Requirements

Learners will require a Level 1 qualification or equivalent experience in Photography

It is recommended that learners would have Level 2 qualifications in Literacy and numeracy or be willing to work towards these.
