Overview

This two year course is designed to meet the needs of industry by creating graduates that are ready with the operational and management skills required to succeed in the airline and airport industry.

The first year of the course focuses primarily on developing the fundamental skills and knowledge required in airline and airport organisations giving you an insight into the varied nature of the aviation industry. The second year builds on this underpinning knowledge to examine relevant theory and applies this in a management perspective.

This degree is delivered at the main Rye Hill Campus making use of the dedicated HE study spaces and well stocked Learning Resource Centre. Teaching also takes place at Newcastle College's world class purpose built Aviation Academy at Newcastle International Airport which houses two Jet Provost aircraft, a fuselage based classroom, a BAE Jetstream 31 aircraft and a fully functioning Boeing 737 aircraft.

You will be taught by staff who have extensive experience of airport operations, cabin crew operations, cabin crew training and aviation organisation management. You will be encouraged to apply for professional accreditation by staff who are active in both local and national networks. In addition you will be given the opportunity to participate in industrial visits to and complete work experience in a busy international airport.

Work Ready Guarantee

As part of our work ready guarantee you will complete a work placement via Newcastle International Airports’ Ambassador Scheme, which may lead to summer seasonal positions within security or ground handling capacities and customer service facing roles at the Airport. You will also be encouraged to apply for student membership with a professional aerospace or management institution.

Who the course is for

This course is designed specifically to set you on the correct path for a career in airline or airport operations and management.

Alongside academic modules, you will take work-based modules that provide you with hands-on experience of airport operations. You will gain an understanding of how airports operate and the legal requirements relating to the operation of commercial aircraft.
 

Qualification Gained

On successful completion you will be awarded a Foundation Degree in Airline and Airport Management by NCG.

Learning Methods

You will learn in a variety of ways including via work-based learning, e-learning and lectures. You will benefit from site visits to national and internationals airports and guest speakers from a range of airlines will share experiences and knowledge during visits.

You will also participate in group work and self-directed study. You will be given opportunities to present group work to your peers developing skills in public speaking and increasing self-confidence.

The employers we work with include: Newcastle International Airport, Swissport, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates, Jet2 and Samson Aviation.
 

Assessment Methods

A range of various assessment methods will be used which are appropriate to the teaching and learning delivery method, mode of attendance and proposed weighting criteria used for each module.

Assessments will include; presentations, reports, assignments and a portfolio. You will be actively encouraged to participate in peer assessment and in group assessments.

 

Progression Opportunities

If you successfully complete the course with a grade average of over 55%, you may progress to our one-year BA (Hons) (Top-Up) degree in Airline and Airport Management.

Career Opportunities

On completion of this course you'll be equipped for supervisory and management positions within the aviation industry.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 64 UCAS Tariff Points at A-level, BTEC QCF Subsidiary, 90 Credit, National or Extended Diploma; Merits in Level 3 Access to HE Diploma, Advanced Apprenticeship.

Applicants are normally expected to have achieved grade C in GCSE Maths & English Language or the Level 2 equivalents.

Mature students (age 21) will be considered only on the basis of relevant industry experience.
Applicants for whom English Language is not their first language are expected to achieve a minimum IELTS Score of 6.0 or the nationally recognised equivalent.

A satisfactory DBS clearance will be required to undertake this programme and must be obtained within the first term of enrolment.

Course Costs

Higher Education courses

Newcastle College’s tuition fee for full-time undergraduate UK and EU students studying a degree starting in 2019 is £9,000 per year. Students can choose to pay their tuition fees upfront or take out a Tuition Fee Loan from the Student Loans Company, which currently defers payment until individuals earn over £25,000 per year after graduation. Students can apply for student finance by registering their details at gov.uk/studentfinance or alternatively they can apply for student finance on their UCAS application form.
