Overview

This one year Top Up Degree is aimed at students who have completed a Level 5 (Foundation Degree) in a relevant topic.

The Applied Sports Coaching Science BSc allows you to focus on the inter-related field of sports coaching, development and sports science. You will be provided with unique opportunities to develop your coaching practice with our industry partners. The course combines scientific research modules and a specialist applied sports coaching module to allow you to gain academic, vocational and research skills required to work within this area. As part of your studies you’ll complete an academic research dissertation on a coaching related subject of your choice.

You will be able to be involved in research focusing on your chosen field and will have the chance to participate in conferences. In addition you will be provided with a wide range of opportunities to develop your practice by engaging with events, volunteering and visits to our industry partners.

Who the course is for

The Applied Sports Coaching Science degree is for those students already holding a Foundation Degree (or equivalent) in a sports coaching, sports development or sports science related discipline wishing to top-up to a full Honours Degree.

If you successfully complete the course, you will gain a BSc (Hons) Applied Sports Coaching Science by NCG.

Course Content

Year one

Applied Sports Coaching Science
This module will develop your knowledge of the skills associated with planning, implementing and evaluating coaching interventions. The module will provide insight into current coaching concepts and their critical application for the needs of the sport performers.

Research Methods 3
This module will provide you with the skills needed to design, collect and analyse data in both the qualitative and quantitative paradigms and will develop your critical thinking skills.

Current Developments and Best Practice
This module will enable you to understand how current thinking and research in your vocational field can influence best practice

Dissertation

The focus of this module is learning through conducting primary research. You will develop skills in research and analysis through independent study of a related subject of your choice
 

Optional module:

Applied Psychological Support
: this module will provide you with an understanding of the use of psychological support in the field of exercise and performance sports.

Applied Physiological Support: This module will help you to develop the laboratory and theoretical skills required to assess performers and to appreciate the applications and limitations of a range of physiological testing protocols when working to enhance the performance of this athlete.

Sport and Exercise Business Enterprise: This module will provide you with the skills and knowledge to be able to enter the sports industry market and work towards the creation of your own enterprise.

Learning Methods

You will learn through a variety of methods, including lectures, seminars, practical sessions, workshops, guest speakers and visits, independent research and case studies. Learning takes place in classrooms, lecture theatres and in our practical areas.

You will also participate in lectures, group work and self-directed study. You will be given opportunities to present group work to your peers developing skills in public speaking and increasing self-confidence

Progression Opportunities

There is also the opportunity to progress with further training, in areas such as a PGCE for those wishing to obtain Qualified Teacher Status, or a Masters Degree qualification.



 

Career Opportunities

On completion, you can progress to employment at supervisory level within the Sports Coaching industry.

You will also be equipped with skills for opportunities within the fields of sports management and sports development.

Entry Requirements

A relevant Foundation Degree or the Level 5 equivalent (HND, Diploma in Higher Education).
Applicants are normally expected to have achieved grade C in GCSE Maths & English Language or the Level 2 equivalents.

Mature students (age 21) will be considered only on the basis of relevant industry experience.
Applicants for whom English Language is not their first language are expected to achieve a minimum IELTS Score of 6.0 or the nationally recognised equivalent.

A satisfactory DBS clearance will be required to undertake this programme and must be obtained within the first term of enrolment.

Course Costs

Higher Education courses

Newcastle College’s tuition fee for full-time undergraduate UK and EU students studying a degree starting in 2019 is £9,000 per year. Students can choose to pay their tuition fees upfront or take out a Tuition Fee Loan from the Student Loans Company, which currently defers payment until individuals earn over £25,000 per year after graduation. Students can apply for student finance by registering their details at gov.uk/studentfinance or alternatively they can apply for student finance on their UCAS application form.
