Earlier this month, Newcastle College Welding Apprentice Stephen Keogh was named “Student of the Year” at the Welding Institute Awards 2024.

30-year-old Stephen is in the first year of his Welding and Fabrication Apprenticeship with local electrical engineering and mechanical fabrication specialist Owben Ltd.

The annual Welding Institute Awards celebrates the best individuals and businesses in the industry.

Stephen said: “I was surprised that I was even nominated to be honest, but it’s a great confidence boost. I came into welding this year because I wanted something more practical, more hands-on than my previous office job. The course is great and the company I work for is great, so this is just the icing on the cake.”

Stephen’s employer added: “We're all really proud of Stephen. He has hit the ground running and continues to be a great asset to the team.”
