A brand-new Life Skills Hub has officially opened this week at Newcastle College.

Based in the Trevelyan Building on the college’s Rye Hill Campus, the Hub offers learners with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities a safe space to meet others and gain essential life skills to help develop their independence.

Focusing on their own interests and personal goals, learners will gain essential skills through practical activities using real and relevant situations.

Rachel Gibson, Head of Central Support Services at Newcastle College, commented: “The Life Skills Hub is an essential part of our offer and will provide opportunities for students to participate in activities such as travel training, personal and social development, and employability skills, through a combination of both academic and practical learning.  The purpose is to help students develop independence and the skills that they’ll need in everyday life.”

The Hub was officially opened by Principal of Newcastle College, Scott Bullock, at a small launch event on Tuesday 31 August.

Speaking to invited colleagues and students as he cut the ribbon, Scott commented: “Our new Life Skills Hub is a brilliant addition to the services and support that we already offer to our students with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities.

“At Newcastle College, we aim to develop the skills and talents of all our students to succeed in modern enterprise. The Life Skills Hub will provide a practical learning environment that is ideal for our students to practice the essential skills that they require to build their independence, support their future goals and pave the way for a successful future for all.”
