Overview

This practical work-related Travel and Tourism Level 2 course will give you an overall appreciation of the travel and tourism industry. You will develop a wide range of skills and gain sound knowledge which will equip you for a junior role in one of the most exciting industries around.

A Level 2 Travel and Tourism Extended Certificate will equip you with an excellent understanding of the modern day tourism and hospitality industry and focuses on both topics on both a regional and national level.

Choose this travel and tourism course if you're looking to gain a stepping stone onto Level 3, or if you want to gain the skills necessary to apply for a junior role within the industry

Course enrichment

• Travel and tourism students have enjoyed trips to Spain and France to help understand culture and travel.
• Students are given the opportunity to support regional events by acting as NewcastleGateshead Initiative city ambassadors
• Last year, students took part in site visits and master classes with companies like British Airways, Newcastle International Airport, Virgin Atlantic and Marriott Hotels.
• You will be given the opportunity to specialise in a specific role, for example, working as a travel agent (working with Hays Travel), resort representative or aviation operative.

Course Content

You will be working on a range of projects which will cover the following core subjects:
 

  • Principles of Customer Service
  • Interpersonal Skills
  • Resort Representatives
  • Worldwide Destination
  • Alongside your main programme you will also develop your skills which will focus on your area of interest including Occupational Studies for the Workplace and Exploring Aviation.

As part of your Prograqmme of Learning, as well as your main qualification, you may also be given the opportunity to undertake work placement to gain experience within the travel industry. You will also take part in a range of enrichment activities from master classes from expert staff to overseas visits and developing industry specific skills such as communication, product knowledge and much more.

English

Newcastle College is committed to developing student’s vital literacy and numeracy skills. Please note that if you do not currently have a grade C (4/5) or higher in GCSE English or maths you will be supported to re sit or work towards resitting one of these qualifications whilst at college
 

PPR

Dedicated sessions with your progress coach each week to help you set and achieve your personal targets. You will develop you expert learner skills within you personal progression session.

Learning Methods

Learning emphasises the vocational aspect of the programme.

There will be lectures, seminars, presentations, group work and role plays. There will also be compulsory educational visits.

Assessment Methods

There are various assessment methods for each unit, ranging from written assignments and reports, individual presentations, online exams and practical activities.

Career Opportunities

This course could help you gain employment within Newcastle International Airport as well as other airports in a range of careers including passenger service agents, airport security, ground staff and customer service.

Entry Requirements

You will need to have one of the following:

  • 4 GCSEs at grade D or grade 3 or above including English Language, or
  • CGLI Level 1 Diploma in Travel and Tourism with Credit/Distinction grade profile plus GCSE passes to C or above in English or Key Skill Level 1 in Literacy, or
  • BTEC certificates in 3 subject areas plus GCSE Grade D or grade 3 or above in English Language or Key Skill Level 2 in Communication.
  • If English is not your first language we would expect an English Language test score of at least 5.5 in all areas of assessment.
  • No holidays booked during term time

Course Costs

16 to 18s

Learners are eligible for free tuition if they are aged 16-18 when beginning their studies.

If the course being applied for is a two-year qualification, you will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the remainder of the course.

If the course being applied for is two separate one-year qualifications and you begin studying year one of the course aged 18, you will be required to pay fees for the second year.

Please note, if you are applying from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland you may be subject to different funding rules than students who live in England.
