Bethany Day
Level 6 BA (Hons) Business Management (Top-Up)
Bethany Day
Bethany was a BA (Hons) Business Management (Top-Up) student who studied and graduated with a Level 6 Qualification at Newcastle College University Centre. Find out more about her passion for business and her University experience.
Could you tell us a little bit about yourself, your background or any details you think are relevant and why you joined Newcastle College?
I used to work in recruitment, and I decided that my career seemed to be at a bit of a standstill, I knew I wanted to advance myself and develop my skills. I didn't have the opportunity to go University when I was 18 as I had had my children when I was young. I did three years of doing part-time evening study which was perfect for me around working full-time. From the moment I put in my application to the University Centre, everyone was really friendly, and I just felt the course would really suit me.
How would you describe your tutors?
The tutors were fantastic. I really enjoyed Terry and Catherine’s (Business lecturers) teaching style, as I felt they brought their real-life experiences from their previous careers in business which benefited my learning. They were really supportive.
What did you enjoy most about your degree?
I just think it was that sense of accomplishment. I look back at when I did my Level 3 in Business, I think my tutors back then would have laughed at the idea of me completing a degree! I scraped by to get my A Levels but I've also done it with a full-time job and with small kids at home. I am really proud of myself.
What inspires you?
I think since doing my degree I've become very self-motivated; I want to do well. And, by having young girls as well, you want to do them proud.
How have the skills you've gained from your degree helped you within your professional career?
My confidence improved with writing reports and writing emails because you're used to doing the assignment. I went from asking someone to proofread to being confident to do them on my own. My work presentations have also improved with my newfound self-confidence with public speaking. I went from being someone who would try to avoid putting myself out there to now saying ‘yes, I'll do that!’.
Have you overcome any challenges while studying for your degree?
I'm not going to lie; the dissertation was probably the hardest time in my life. I, probably like most students, didn't start when the tutors encouraged you to start. I didn't leave it to the last minute but, looking back, I wish I had started a bit sooner. What I found really helpful was that the tutors had the capacity to give you one-on-one feedback due to the smaller class sizes. I felt very reassured that I was on the right track throughout.
What advice would you give to anyone who's considering studying here?
I'd definitely say do it. I think the personal growth you get from studying for a degree is amazing. Also, listen to the tutors because they do give fantastic advice!
Describe your student experience in three words
Development, supportive and challenging (but good challenging!).
