A degree designed to launch careers in the film and television industry has been awarded Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) status amidst a creative boom in the North East.

Newcastle College University Centre’s (NCUC) Foundation Degree in Film, TV and Media Production has received the prestigious quality mark from Skills England, confirming it equips graduates with the skills employers demand.

HTQs are Level 4 and 5 qualifications designed with industry partners to ensure learners are ready to work when they graduate.

NCUC’s  Film, TV and Media Production Foundation Degree immerses students in visual storytelling, covering everything from scriptwriting and content creation to production and professional practice. Developed in collaboration with Northern Film, the North East International Film Festival (NEIFF) and Newcastle Gateshead Initiative (NGI), the degree reflects the region’s growing reputation as a hub for tv and film.

The news follows a wave of investment into the North East’s creative industries and a succession of announcements centred on its continue growth, including plans to establish a national Centre for Writing in Newcastle and a brand-new film studio complex in Sunderland.

With more and more creative jobs expected for the region, NCUC’s HTQ programmes are poised to play a key role in shaping the next generation of creative professionals in the North.

Connor Herron, Head of Higher Education at NCUC said: “We are delighted that another degree has been awarded HTQ status. We’re committed to delivering high-quality education and real-world experience that prepares learners to thrive in their chosen careers, and this HTQ is a fantastic example of how we can support people into the region’s growing creative sector.”
