An Access to HE Science learner from Newcastle College is celebrating after being announced as runner-up at the “Access to HE Excellence Awards”, organised by national awarding body Ascentis.

Alex Laws (pictured) came second in the Outstanding Academic Achievement Category for excelling in their academic study by producing assessed work of outstanding quality whilst on their Access to HE course.

One of the judges said: “This learner has demonstrated clear growth in their knowledge and skills through their journey to study veterinary medicine. It is encouraging to see that this learner's achievements have fueled a passion for the sciences and that they value the opportunities that completing their Access to HE Science course has created. We wish them all the best with studying for their chosen degree.”

Another judge commented on how impressed they were with Alex’s commitment to studying, adding: “Alex clearly went above and beyond what was expected from the course and undertook research outside of the lesson to further their development and knowledge”.

Alex received a certificate and a cheque for £200 from Ascentis.
