A Newcastle College student has recently completed a successful placement with local company Building Design Northern (BDN) to support her ambitions for a career in architecture.

17-year-old Molly Foster from Sunderland is currently studying a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Interior Design and Architecture at Newcastle College.

Molly was invited to join Sunderland and Ulverston based architect and engineering firm BDN for a 6-week placement alongside her studies, where she worked closely with BDN’s architectural department, shadowing architects on live projects. She developed industry specific employability skills, including gaining key experience of the processes required to successfully deliver interior spaces.

Molly said: “I really enjoyed my time at BDN, it allowed me to see a range of projects and appreciate the detail and huge consideration it takes to create a final design. I was able to see how a practice operates, which has inspired me to continue to study architecture at university, with my end goal to design residential properties.”

BDN’s Director of Operations Ryan Doyle added: “It has been a pleasure to welcome Molly to BDN for an industry placement. Molly expressed high ambitions throughout her placement, impressing the team with her detailed designs and eagerness to learn.”

Libby Lagun, Head of Art and Design at Newcastle College commented: “Work experience is a vital part of studying here at Newcastle College. It gives our learners the chance to spend time in industry, gaining the important skills and experience that employers really value, while developing their confidence and being inspired by the professionals around them.

“It is thanks to employers like BDN, who recognise the importance of work experience, that we are able to offer these opportunities and I’d like to thank them for the excellent experience and support they gave to Molly during her placement with them.”
