More than 40 students were recognised for their outstanding achievements at the Newcastle College Student Awards 2026, held at the Vertu Arena.
The annual awards brought together students, families, friends, colleagues and partners to celebrate the dedication, resilience and determination shown by learners from across the College throughout the academic year.
Opening the ceremony, Principal Jon Ridley praised students for their commitment, progress and perseverance, highlighting that success takes many forms and that every achievement deserves recognition.
The evening featured inspiring speeches from students Archie Ellison and Priscillah Mapungwana, who reflected on their experiences at Newcastle College and the opportunities, friendships and personal growth they have gained during their studies.
Awards were presented across all curriculum areas, recognising outstanding achievement in subjects ranging from engineering, construction and energy to health, science, business, digital technologies, creative industries and foundation learning.
Alongside curriculum awards, students were also recognised through a series of Faculty Awards celebrating peer support, industry engagement, commitment, resilience and excellence. These awards recognised learners who have made a significant contribution to their peers, embraced opportunities beyond the classroom and demonstrated exceptional dedication throughout their studies.
Guests also enjoyed refreshments prepared and served by students from Newcastle College's Canteen Club and Hospitality & Catering provision, giving learners the opportunity to showcase their professional skills while helping make the evening a memorable celebration for all in attendance.
The evening concluded with the presentation of the College's highest student honour - the Student of the Year Awards - recognising five individuals whose journeys, achievements and contributions embody the values and spirit of Newcastle College.
The 2026 Student of the Year winners were:
- Business and Service Industries: Alf Vissenga
- Digital and Creative Industries: Archie Ellison
- Engineering, Energy, Built Environment and Transport: Jodie Lee McCartney
- Foundation Learning: Man Hang Wong
- Health, Science and Welfare: Layton Todd
Jon Ridley, Principal of Newcastle College, said: “The Student Awards was a wonderful evening and an opportunity to recognise students from right across the College for their effort, determination and achievement.
“What stood out to me was the range of reasons students were being recognised. Academic success matters, but so too does resilience, kindness, commitment and the positive contribution people make to those around them. The awards reflected all of those things.
“It was a pleasure to celebrate alongside students, colleagues, family and friends. Congratulations to all the nominees and award winners, and thank you to everyone who played a part in supporting their success.”
Archie Ellison, who delivered a speech during the ceremony and picked up the Outstanding Achievement Award in Music and Performing Arts and the Student of the Year Award for Digital and Creative Industries, said: “Receiving this recognition means a huge amount to me. My time at Newcastle College has been filled with incredible opportunities, unforgettable experiences and the chance to develop both personally and professionally.
“The support of the staff and the friendships I've made along the way have played a huge part in my journey. I've been encouraged to challenge myself, take on new opportunities and grow in confidence as a performer.
“I’m incredibly grateful for everything Newcastle College has given me and proud to be part of such a talented and supportive community. I’m excited to take the next step in my career and build on everything I’ve learned here.”
The awards provided a fitting celebration of another successful year at Newcastle College, recognising the talent, resilience and determination that continue to define its student community.
