Dance students from Newcastle College will be providing the official half-time entertainment for local rugby team the Newcastle Falcons at every game this season.
The year one and two Level 3 Dance students will perform new choreography specifically created for the games. They performed the first of these on Sunday 8 October, where Newcastle Rugby Foundation also launched their new charity shirt. Level 3 Acting student Alexander Pilkington will also be acting as the club’s official mascot, Flash.
Gemma Wynne, Curriculum Leader, Music and Performing Arts, said: “I’m incredibly proud of the level of commitment, dedication and professionalism these students have shown so far. They have a gruelling timetable, and for some of them this is only their first year, so we’ve really thrown them in at the deep end, but they are responding amazingly. To have only been on the course 5-6 weeks, and then go out and dance in front of 3,000 people at a live sporting event, it’s a brilliant achievement.”
Jack Redpath, Head of Music and Performing Arts, added: “Our Level 3 Dance students now provide the half-time entertainment for both the Eagles and the Falcons, which is a great honour, and a fantastic experience for the learners. I’m proud of the work the team has put into securing these partnerships with our local sporting teams, and I’m excited to see what other opportunities will come out of them in the future.”
