From Lockdown To Local Art Gallery – Photography Students Work Displayed At Side Gallery Exhibition

Congratulations to the Newcastle College University Centre Photography students whose images representing life during lockdown within the North East have been featured as part of the Side Gallery 'Lockdown Living' Exhibition.

In an attempt to capture life in the North East throughout lockdown, Amberside invited local enthusiastic photographers to submit images capturing life in lockdown within the region. The ‘Lockdown Living’ exhibition, held by Newcastle’s very own Side Gallery showcased work from a number of Newcastle College University Centre’s talented Digital Arts HE students.

Whilst an ongoing relationship between the College and Amber meant that University Centre students were encouraged to apply, there was an open call for submissions, highlighting just what an achievement it was for six of the University Centre’s students to become finalists.

This is not the first time that Newcastle College students have been featured in Side Gallery, with many previous students going down the route of documentary photography which is the type of work that Side Gallery represents.

Jonathan Keys

Historical re-enactment is an industry that relies on contact with the public, bringing history alive at historical sites around the North East, During lockdown I travelled to document those involved in this now silent industry, using historical photographic methods (analogue) to capture the historical re-enactor confined to their homes during these uncertain times. Allowing each chemically produced photo to contaminate the next photo this has resulted in a series of images that connect the historical aspect of the re-enactment industry to the differing effects of the Covid-19 virus by its unpredictable results from person to person/photo to photo. This short series of glass plates was done as my final project for my Newcastle College University Centre BA (Hons) Photography course.

My name is Keeley and I have been studying Photography at Newcastle College University Centre. I have submitted this image that I had taken during lockdown in May. This picture has been taken at South Shields Beach. I believe this image perfectly describes the isolating feeling that Lockdown has created for many of us in the past year.

My image was taken to capture the sadness and normality behind closed doors during the Pandemic. The reflection is a view of the blue skies and beautiful fresh air my dad is missing.

I entered my photograph of my mam, I wanted to do something to cheer her up, by taking her image. She wanted to hold a light and 'say shine a light' when things get better and improve, and we get out of lockdown.

My image features my granddaughter Amelia Ferry and is part of a series of lockdown images of my family. We were lucky in many respects during lockdown, as my wife and I had our 2 daughters, my daughters partner and 3 granddaughters living with us for all 3 UK lockdowns. The series was shot in the first lockdown last year. The image of Amelia highlighted the isolation that my granddaughter felt being unable to see her school friends

This is the image I submitted for The Side Gallery Lockdown Exhibition. Taken last year, it shows my 84 years old mother, Patricia (Pat) waving to us from her back door after delivery of her Sunday lunch. Like a lot of people during lockdown, Mam's hair was longer than usual. She still kept up her smile.
