Newcastle College welcomed celebrity hairdresser Andrew Barton to campus earlier this month.

One of the UK’s most celebrated names in hairdressing, Andrew hosted masterclasses for students and apprentices, as well as CPD sessions for local hairdressers.

Andrew is best known as the hairdressing expert from the hit makeover TV show, 10 Years Younger and has an impressive collection of prestigious awards, including British Hairdresser of the Year and British Hair Icon.

He demonstrated his signature A-line bob for students, before inviting them to have a go themselves. While he walked around the room checking their work, Andrew gave the students advice and guidance on what to focus on.

He said it was really important for them to focus on the quality of their work and to take the time to perfect their techniques, telling them: “When you’re working with your clients in the salon, you don’t want them to think you’re average, do you? We want to be the best we can be. That’s why we’re constantly learning, constantly practising.”

On the third day, Andrew selected Level 3 hairdressing student Easten Cairns to help him with a CPD event for local stylists. Head of Curriculum, Beth Gubbins said: “I’m not at all surprised that Andrew singled Easten out, as he has shown a great commitment over the last three years within the college environment.

“He is very motivated and dedicated to his chosen career. He is supportive to others around him and has done really well at inter-college and regional competitions.”

Beth also wanted to thank Andrew for taking the time out of his busy schedule to come and demonstrate to our students: “We’re really grateful to Andrew for sharing his vast experience with our learners, and for inspiring them to see how far they can take their career when they work hard and practice consistently.”

Got to our Instagram channel to see a video of Andrew talking about the importance of technique.
