Trident Maintenance Services
Trident Maintenance Services is a painting and decorating company which has operated nationwide since its foundation in 2019, specialising in redecoration work for a variety of clients in social housing, local council sites and hospitals, among other businesses.
We spoke to the Community Support Officer at Trident Maintenance Services' North East branch, Lorraine Hetherington, about how her company has benefitted from their partnership with Newcastle College.
Could you tell us about your company?
Trident Maintenance Services was established in 2019 to provide high-quality painting, decorating and interior renovation services to clients across the country. We have branches nationwide, with our Head Office being based in Glasgow, while our North East branch office operates out of Cramlington. We are proud to serve a broad range of clients across the public and private sectors, including social housing, local council sites and hospitals, among other businesses.
Why did you choose to hire apprentices through Newcastle College?
We have worked with Newcastle College for many years and we have always been provided with incredible professional support, whatever our needs or our apprentices' needs may be. The tutors and Skills Trainers from the College are always available to discuss the apprentices' progress and make sure they are on track to succeed with our organisation.
How have your apprentices from Newcastle College benefitted your business?
We currently host seven apprentices with Newcastle College in our North East branch. Each of our apprentices bring youth, energy and enthusiasm to learn the best practice in the painting and decorating trade. All our apprentices are placed with a mentor who is responsible for them during their days on site with us. The mentors share their years of experience in industry, passing on their hard-earned knowledge to the apprentice, which helps them to learn and grow as young painters and decorators.
Here at Trident, we have a philosophy of "Growing Our Own", so our mentorship programme and the support we receive with our apprentices makes sure that all our apprentices become fully-experienced painters and decorators once they are qualified.
What advice would you give to a business considering hiring an apprentice?
Go for it! Apprentices will allow you to build up your workforce with eager young talent. The next generation of industry professionals will use your company to learn vital skills and knowledge on the job, while also picking up connections and practice that they wouldn't anywhere else. Using mentorship opportunities means the older generation is able to pass on their own experience to your apprentices, which will help them to develop and will give your business a pipeline of strong future employees who know how you operate. It is very satisfying to us to watch our apprentices grow.
Why would you recommend Newcastle College apprenticeships to other employers?
Yes, we would highly recommend Newcastle College apprenticeships to other employers. The support we've received from the College has been outstanding. Their central location makes it convenient for our apprentices to travel using public transport and their facilities and equipment mean our apprentices are all trained up to the latest industry standards that employers look for. This ensures apprentices are learning in a safe, modern environment that prepares them to meet industry demands once they are qualified.
