Employer case study


Care UK is one of the leading providers of health and social care in the UK, their services span residential and nursing care homes, primary and secondary healthcare community care and mental health treatment, care and support. Their north east operation were looking to recruit a number of new staff for roles in domiciliary care or support care to boost their workforce but found that many new people coming into the sector didn’t have the job ready skills they were hoping for.

The solution

Care UK turned to Newcastle College to provide support and guidance in relation to training and recruitment. The college run a sector based work academy for jobseekers looking for new careers in the care sector and Care UK were especially interested in meeting potential candidates who had completed the five week healthcare employability programme.

The employability programme is designed to provide people with the necessary skills to work in this profession and guarantees those who complete the course an interview with various care companies with current vacancies.


Care UK interviewed a number of candidates and were so impressed with the quality of people that they met that seven jobseekers were offered permanent roles with the company. For Florence Little, one of the successful candidates, this was exactly what she had been hoping to find ‘This was something I always knew I wanted to do and I still can’t believe that it’s taken just a five week course to enable me to get the job I really wanted.’
