Engineering Science Access to Higher Education - Level 3

• GCSEs at Grade 4 or above in English and science, and GCSE at Grade 5 or above in maths.

If English is not your first language, you will also need an IELTS score of 6.0 or above.

If you hold a level 2 or higher maths and science qualification from your home country, you may be able to progress straight onto the Access to HE Engineering Science course whilst taking GCSE English alongside. Approval is done on a case-to-case basis, and your qualifications must be translated and NARIC equivalency completed.

If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a 60-credit Access to HE Diploma in Engineering Science from Ascentis.

Maths

• Algebra, geometry and sequences (including: factor, remainder, and binomial theorems)
• Trigonometry (trig identities and functions)
• Calculus (differentiation and integration)
• Engineering Maths (kinematics, forces and vectors)

Physics

• Introductory physics (vectors and scalars, Newton’s Laws, particle physics, waves, and optics)
• Energy and the Environment (energy transformations in renewable and non-renewable energy sources, Sankey diagrams and heat transfer processes)
• Dynamics (2D work and power, momentum, circular and simple harmonic motion, and gravity)
• Planning and carrying out a practical in physics

Engineering

• Introductory engineering (units and measure, moments, work, energy and power, conservation of energy, and basic electricity)
• Mechanical Engineering (2D moments, linear and angular motion, the gas laws and heat transfer equations, Pascal’s law, and Bernoulli’s equation)
• Electrical Engineering (Kirchhoff’s and Ohm’s law, circuit analysis, AC versus DC, capacitance, magnetic and electric fields, and inductance)

Upon successful completion of this course, you could progress onto a higher degree course in any Engineering Science degree (Mechanical, Electrical, Renewable, Chemical, Civil), Mathematics, Physics, or Astrophysics, or any Computer Science related degrees or a Foundation Degree in Engineering at Newcastle College University Centre.
