Overview

This course offers an excellent introduction to a range of hairdressing skills to enable you to  progress to a Level 2/3. 

 You’ll also have the opportunity to undertake visits to exhibitions and attend additional training courses (fees will be incurred). This course may include 9.00 am starts, a late night and some Saturdays.

Who the course is for

This course is ideal for school leavers aged 16-18 who want work towards a career in hairdressing.

 

Qualification Gained

Level 1 Certificate in an Introduction to the Hairdressing Sector.

Applications received for Art and Design and Digital Arts courses will require an interview and portfolio check.

Course Content

• Presenting a professional image in a salon
• Health and Safety
• Working with others in the hair sector
• shampoo and conditioning
• styling women's hair
• plaiting and twisting
• colour hair using temporary colour
• create a hair image
 

 

Learning Methods

You will learn through a combination of interactive classroom teaching, working in small groups and practical work. During your studies you will work in our modern hair salons. You will be working with IT resources.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through practical observation, oral questions, written projects, discussions, presentations.
Please be aware that due to awarding body regulations your finished portfolio must be made available, if requested, up to three years after your course has been completed.
 

Progression Opportunities

 Level 2 Technical Certificate in Cutting and Styling.

 

 

Career Opportunities

On completion of a level 2 qualification you could gain employment in a hair salon.

Entry Requirements

You must be under 18 years if age.

GCSE Grade 2 in English and maths.

Excellent attendance is required (100% expected, minimum 90% acceptable)

Must be prepared to study towards GCSE/Functional Skills in numeracy, literacy.


If English is not your first language you will need an English language test score of 5 ( A score of 5 in speaking and listening and 5 in writing)
 

Full dexterity, good eyesight (with or without contact lens, glasses or other). Students with disabilities will be assessed on an individual basis to confirm their suitability for the course

Course Costs

16 to 18s

Learners are eligible for free tuition if they are aged 16-18 when beginning their studies.

If the course being applied for is a two-year qualification, you will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the remainder of the course.

If the course being applied for is two separate one-year qualifications and you begin studying year one of the course aged 18, you will be required to pay fees for the second year.

If you are aged 18 when beginning the course, it is advised that you talk to our Student Services Team on 0191 200 4000 or by email enquiries@ncl-coll.ac.uk who will be able to explain the options available.

Please note, if you are applying from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland you may be subject to different funding rules than students who live in England.
