Stacey Layzell Adult Counselling Case Study

Stacey Layzell

I had to change career paths when I had my second colostomy as I was in quite an active role before. I can find it hard to concentrate in class because I’m on very strong medication following multiple operations, but the tutors are so accommodating, and I am determined to complete this course and become a counsellor so that I can help people.

Could you tell us a bit about yourself, your background?

I’m 44 years old, I have four grown-up children and one grandchild. I had to change career paths when I had my second colostomy as I was in quite an active role before. I can find it hard to concentrate in class because I’m on very strong medication following multiple operations, but the tutors are so accommodating, and I am determined to complete this course and become a counsellor so that I can help people. I lost my partner and my brother to suicide so if I could save one life, that would be amazing.

Why did you choose to study an adult course at Newcastle College?

Newcastle College has such a good reputation - plus, my kids all went here so I know it’s good. Everything I need is to hand and there are accessible toilets on every floor, so I can relax and not worry about needing to nip out. With the course I’ve just finished, which was a short course in Mental Health Advocacy, I wanted to do come away with a deeper understanding of what other people might be going through, and to know the psychological signs I should be looking for. I will definitely take it with me into any future workplaces because I think that kind of informed, clinical awareness is so important.

Were there any barriers you had to get past?

I never know how my health is going to be. There have been times where I have had to miss classes, or leave multiple times during a class, but I'm fortunate that all my classmates and tutors are all so understanding, so I don’t feel like my health is a barrier to getting to where I want to be now.

What benefits do you think there are in studying here?

One big benefit is the fact that Newcastle College and the University Centre offer so many courses. For instance, the Mental Health Advocacy course I’ve just completed is actually an extra, free two-week Adult course that I did between my Level 3 and Level 4 courses, which really helped me prepare for the step up to degree-level studies. And this isn't even the only available short course like that on offer! It’s an added bonus to studying here, for sure.

What do you enjoy the most about your course?

I have the most amazing tutors, they’re so knowledgeable and understanding. My fellow students are lovely too. Socially, I don’t get out as much as I used to because of my illness, so it’s great to meet like-minded people, people who are as passionate as I am about helping people with their mental health.
