ESOL and Adult Skills for Work

Farzaneh Zohrevand
I’ve just started a position as a volunteer porter for the North East Ambulance Service, and I’m planning on going to University soon to fulfil my dream of working in the medical field in the UK. I'm closer to my dream than I've ever been, and that's because of my time here at Newcastle College.
Tell us a bit about you, your background:
I’m originally from Iran and moved to the UK a few years ago. I’ve always been passionate about healthcare and helping others. I’ve just started a position as a volunteer porter for the Noth East Ambulance Service, and I’m planning on going to University soon to fulfil my dream of working in the medical field in the UK. My tutor told me about the porter role, and how it might help with my University applications, and then helped me to apply. I honestly don’t think I could have done it without him.
What was your favourite thing about your course?
The support from my teachers; they were always kind, patient, and made learning feel achievable. They also shared real-life knowledge from working in the industry themselves and gave useful advice that helped me understand what’s expected in the workplace.
What benefits do you think there are in studying here?
It’s a welcoming place where you can grow, gain confidence, and truly feel like you’re moving forward.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about doing an adult course at Newcastle College?
Don’t wait - just start. It can open so many doors and give you confidence you didn’t know you had.
What has been the highlight of your time studying here?
Being encouraged by my tutor, Nick Brown, to apply for the North East Ambulance Service. That was a big step for me, and I don’t believe I would have been given the opportunity without his support.
Describe your student experience in three words:
Supportive, encouraging, empowering.
Tell us a bit more about your role with the North East Ambulance Service:
My tutor told me about the role, and how it might help with my University applications, and then helped me to apply. I honestly don’t think I could have done it without him. I’m just completing my last training session with them, and then I will start volunteering at Freeman Hospital. All the skills I gained at college (especially in English) made a big difference. If all goes well with my GCSE results, I plan to apply for medical school this year. I couldn’t have done it without Nick, or Newcastle College.
