Hundreds of students officially graduated from Newcastle College University Centre (NCUC) this month, celebrating their achievements in style at Newcastle Civic Centre.

More than 800 graduates walked the stage to receive their degrees in front of peers, tutors, family and friends, ready to start the next step in their careers.

Inspirational stories of success were shared with guests, from those who have balanced full-time study with family and work commitments, to those who have overcome health struggles to graduate.

Engineering Student of the Year Lily Turner juggled her degree alongside shiftwork at Nissan, often attending lectures straight from night shift. Her determination to succeed meant she was fully committed to this gruelling schedule, even volunteering for additional lectures and tutorials to ensure her success.

Art and Design graduate Lamin Gibba also excelled all expectations of tutors, inspiring other students with their creativity, talent and commitment. Alongside full-time study and parenting, Lamin ran a successful clothing business, designing a full clothing range which was made and produced in his home country of Gambia while coordinating a full-scale fashion show with professional models, musicians and food right here in the North East.

Student speaker and Teacher Education graduate Louise Aldred, who has progressed with Newcastle College from a Level 2 course to her Level 7 Master’s degree, addressed the crowd in the closing ceremony.

She said: “Newcastle College is a place that quickly became more than just a college to me…The enthusiasm of the staff, and the clear passion they show for their subjects and students, played a huge part in why I wanted to complete my entire educational journey here at Newcastle College and the University Centre.”

Engineering graduate Marcus Morgan also reflected on his time at the University Centre, and said: “Tonight isn't just about celebrating the completion of an Engineering degree, it's about recognising a pivotal transition. We’re not just graduates. Some of us will be engineers of the future and as we step out of this building and into the world, let us remember the lessons we've learned, not just from our textbooks, but from each other.”

Hosting the graduation ceremonies was Alan Fenton, Deputy Principal of Newcastle College alongside Jon Ridley, Principal and Executive Lead for Higher Education across NCG.

Each ceremony also welcomed a guest speaker from industry, including Chair of Energi Coast and Strategic Adviser to ORE Catapult, Tony Quinn, and artist and graphic designer Jimmy Turrell.
