Newcastle College has appointed Carole Kitching as its new Principal.

Carole, who has been Interim Principal of the college since January, will take the helm at one of the country’s largest Further and Higher Education institutions with immediate effect.

She said she would build on existing good links with regional employers to make sure the college continues to deliver what learners need in today’s highly competitive job market and challenging economic landscape.

Newcastle College is one of the largest FE and HE institutions in the country with over 22,000 students. The college has excellent links with employers and, with over 80 Foundation, Honours and Postgraduate Degrees. The college was one of the first to be awarded Foundation Degree Awarding Powers and is one of only 7 FE colleges in the UK to offer full time courses for 14-16 year olds from this September.

More than 93% of higher education students go on to employment or further training, but Carole said she would be looking for ways in which courses at all levels could be developed in even more ways to give students the skills that will get them a job or help them start their own business.

Carole has had a long career in the education and training sector, working in both the private and public sectors. She started teaching English and since has held a number of senior posts in London, Abingdon and Witney College and Yorkshire Coast College. In her role as Interim Principal and Chief Executive at Yorkshire Coast, Carole was responsible for what Ofsted inspectors described ‘the most comprehensive and convincing turnaround’ within just 14 months.

In March 2011, Carole joined Newcastle College as Deputy Principal with a wide ranging remit across schools, students and recruitment. In September 2012 she was promoted to NCG Group Director (Students and Staff) and in January 2013 took the role of Interim Principal.

Joe Docherty, Chief Executive of NCG, said: “Carole is the ideal leader to take the college forward into a new and exciting era. I am confident that Carole will bring a great deal to the role and help us to drive the college to future success.”

Commenting on her new role, Carole added: “I am delighted to have been appointed as Principal of Newcastle College. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to lead such an outstanding organisation on to further success on behalf of our young people, businesses and those both in work and seeking work in our region.

“These are challenging economic times and the very best skills training which spans entry level to higher skills has never been more important for our students and the prosperity of the North East.

“We have fantastic staff at the college who are committed to our mission of improving the life chances of individuals and the economic wellbeing of local people and communities.

“We also have strong links with local businesses and the local authority. I am optimistic that we can continue to build on the great things that we have achieved over the years and create new opportunities to help the people of the North East fulfil their true potential.”
