Two promising students from Newcastle College have made it through to the final of the 2018 UK Young Seafood Chef of the Year competition, after winning the Northern Regional Heat.
Antonin Bledy and Bartek Waszkiewicz, both Level 1 Hospitality students who work part-time in industry, teamed up with mentor Matthew Beadnell to cook up a three-course seafood menu to impress the judges and were crowned regional winners at Sunderland College in May.
They’ll now compete against eight other college teams in the national final, to be held in Grimsby on 15 June. The winning team will take home £500 each, cooking equipment and catering supply vouchers for their college, plus a trip of a lifetime to Holland for a 4-day culinary experience.
Matthew Beadnell, Hospitality Lecturer and the team mentor in the competition said: “This is the first year we’ve entered the competition and it’s really exciting to be through to the final.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for the College to showcase the talent of its students and it opens up opportunities in terms of partnerships with employers.
“I put Antonin and Bartek forward as I know how well they work together as a team. They’ve definitely risen to the challenge so far and I’m looking forward to seeing them perform at the final.”
Winners will be announced at the event on 15 June, good luck to the Newcastle College Hospitality Team.
