College Roofers In the Running for Apprentice of the Year

Posted On 6th June 2018 By Charlotte Horsfield

Newcastle College apprentices will be going head to head later this month, competing to be crowned the best apprentice in the country.

Redland Roofing, part of BMI Group, the UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of pitched roof systems, hosts the annual Redland and Icopal Apprentice of the Year competition, pitting 20 apprentices from across the nation against each other.

Two titles are up for grabs at the event; flat roofing and pitched roofing, with ten apprentices competing in each category. Winners will receive £1,000 cash each to invest in their future and a lifetime of free training at the BMI National Training Centre, as well as a coveted trophy.

All finalists have already benefitted from their entry into the competition, receiving professional coaching on running a roofing business and meeting industry leaders, as well as a pack of roofing tools and supplies.

The event, due to be held on Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 June at the Redland headquarters in Gloucester, aims to address the challenges faced by the construction industry in its bid to meet the government target of a million new homes by 2020.

Open to all roofing apprentices in the UK, Newcastle College has six finalists in the competition. Joe Gladstone, Mark Thompson, Keiran Foster, Ross Adams and Oliver Drew will all compete in the flat roofing category, while Jordan Condren will fly the flag in pitched roofing.

Alan Bessford, Programme Lead at Newcastle College’s Roofing Department said: “The Redland Apprentice of the Year Competition is a fantastic opportunity for our apprentices. I was really keen for them to get involved and it’s amazing to have six out of 20 finalists at the competition, it means we’re in with a really good chance of winning!

“The students are all really excited for the final and hopefully we will come away from the day with a winner but if not, the experience has been hugely beneficial to all of the apprentices. I’m really proud of them already.”

The competition will be held on 26 and 27 June, with winners announced on the day. Good luck to all Newcastle College finalists!
