Beginners Ceramics

This course runs 3-4 times per year.

You will be notified of the next available start date once you have submitted your application.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but if English is not your first language, you will need to complete ESOL Level 1.

This course is not certified by an awarding body

• How to make using slabs and coils of clay
• How to decorate your work using slips and glazes
• How to create a potter's stamp to sign your own work
• Types of clay and stages it goes through to create a finished ceramic piece
• Health and safety within the ceramics studio
• Types of tools used to create hand-built ceramics and how to use them
• How to throw and turn pieces on the pottery wheel
• How to glaze your work to finish it

English and maths are naturally embedded into the course through terminology and analysis of work created. You will use measuring and planning to create balanced and equal structures that will survive the kiln firing.

Upon successful completion of this course, you could progress onto a higher level course such as Ceramics - Level 2 or become an apprentice to a potter/sculptor/ ceramicist.
