 This course is ideal for 16 to 18 year olds wishing to pursue a potential career in aircraft maintenance.

Qualification Gained

If you successfully complete the full 2 year programme you will be awarded a BTEC L3 National Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering.

 Your studies will be formed into units that fall into the following subject areas:

• Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team
• Aircraft Flight Principles and Practice
• Aircraft Gas Turbine Engines
• Airframe Mechanical Systems
• Aircraft Electrical and Instrument Systems
• Aircraft First Line Maintenance Operations
• Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering
• Specialist Project
• Engineering Product Design and Manufacture

Learning Methods

  • Formal theoretical sessions
  • Classroom and Hangar based activities
  • Laboratory, workshop and on aircraft activities
  • Visits to areas of vocational interest
  • Workbooks and research projects

Assessment Methods

 You will be assessed through in class tests, written assignments and controlled assessments. Your performance during practical tasks and activities will also be assessed.


Progression Opportunities

If you successfully complete the BTEC L3 National Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering and achieve the following:
• Achievement – MM grade profile (required UCAS points)
• Attendance – over 90% for the duration of the course.
• Attitude – Positive and committed to learning.

You could progress onto:
• Certificate of Higher Education Aircraft Maintenance Engineering.
• BSc (Hons) Aircraft Maintenance Engineering

Entry Requirements

  •  5 GCSE (grades A* to C or grade 4) or equivalent at Pass level including Mathematics, English and a Science (Physics/Chemistry)
  • Pass the Aviation Academy entrance assessment during induction (based on maths, physics and logic)
  • If English is not your first language, you will need an English test score of 5.5 or above.

Course Costs

16 to 18s

Learners are eligible for free tuition if they are aged 16-18 when beginning their studies.

If the course being applied for is a two-year qualification, you will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the remainder of the course.

If the course being applied for is two separate one-year qualifications and you begin studying year one of the course aged 18, you will be required to pay fees for the second year.

Please note, if you are applying from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland you may be subject to different funding rules than students who live in England.
