Rail Engineering Case Study

Tait McKenna - Level 3 Extended Diploma in Rail Engineering

“I didn’t enjoy school. I was glad of the change Newcastle College brought to my education. The environment suits me better and I enjoy coming to college. I came to an Open Event to get my mam off my back. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. At the event I spoke to engineering and they helped me make my decision. I didn’t need to speak to any other subject areas as I knew it was the right course for me. I started on Level 2 and I have progressed onto Level 3.

The course is very flexible, so the skills you gain are transferable. In addition, the salary in the industry is persuading. I enjoy the range of different activities you get to do on the course. If you are hard working, many opportunities come your way. I feel the course has benefited me as I am working towards an industry-recognised qualification and gaining additional qualifications along the way that employers look for. The addition qualifications I am doing are Signalling, Train maintenance, CAD and Railway Infrastructure Mechanical Engineering Principles (RIME). As part of my course I am doing a work placement with Ganymede it’s 30 hours offsite in the real working environment, with a guaranteed job at the end of it.”
