Engineering Case Study

Olav Johnsen - Level 3 Construction and the Built Environment (Civil/Construction) now Level 3 Civil Engineering

“When I finished my A Levels I wanted to study something I could see a career in. I researched and found a lot of information about engineering. I looked online for places to study in Newcastle and Newcastle College came up. I attended an Open Day and got lots of information about the courses and apprenticeships. I choose to study a course over an apprenticeship as felt it suited me better. College felt familiar. The built environment course caught my attention as it has really good job prospects and I am interested in how structures are made.

I enjoy the social side of the course. Everyone here helps each other. The course is closely mirrored to industry so you get a taste of what working in the environment would be like. I have found each unit interesting. I know what I have gained from coming to college is what employers look for and it has set me up really well for a degree. After college my plan is to go to university studying quantity surveying for 4 years. Anyone looking at the engineering industry as a career I would say if you enjoy how things work and why then the built environment course is for you.”
