Childcare Case Study

Joseph Long - Level 3 Childcare and Education

“I stayed on at school for sixth form but the closer it got to my exams I knew I wouldn’t get the grades I had hoped for. So I looked into my options and saw that Newcastle College did the course I was looking for. I came along to an open day and future student event. Both events were good, I had a tour of the building and met my tutors. After being at the events, I decided to move to Newcastle College to study instead. The course is more hands on and that’s what I liked about it. I feel that college offers you with the opportunity to study a subject that you’re interested in in-depth. If you know what you want to do it’s the best place to be.

The placement opportunity that Newcastle College provide is great. I have two placements a year. This year I have spent one term at a school working with children aged three to five years. On placement, I help with support materials, activities in the classroom and I have been on a number of trips, including a day out at the farm and a pantomime. My next placement is at a nursery and I am looking forward to it, working with children from 6 months to three years. Placement gives you a taste of what your career could be and it helps with your growth as a person and if you make a good impression, you never know it could lead to employment. My advice to other looking to study at Newcastle College is go for it. I have enjoyed college. Do something you enjoy regardless of what others think.”
