Engineering Case Study

Amber Mathie - Level 3 Diploma in Engineering (Craft Engineering)

"I wanted to start a career that I can be proud of and show my son what you can get out of life with hard work. I chose to come to Newcastle College as its local, many of my friends came here, and I had good recommendations from them. I came to an open day and chatted to the engineering tutors. I chose the course because you get a taste of everything fabrication, design, electronics and mechanical.

The tutors go beyond to help you. The course leaders are very proactive. They are respectful to all ages and are good at adapting their teaching style to suit each learner. If you have any questions, they are always happy to help. When I first started on the course, I felt like I was out of my depth. The tutors have supported me so much and I have seen myself come on leaps and bonds. Last year I got all distinctions and merits.

The financial support available at the College is great. You can apply for bursaries for uniforms and I have benefited from the free travel to college scheme, college meals and help towards childcare costs. This has really helped me as it’s taken away the financial barriers for me, meaning I don’t have to worry about how I am going to affording to come to college."
