A Newcastle College University Centre student has had their work shown and received an honourable mention at an international photography exhibition.

Of the 1000 submissions to the Los Angeles Center of Photography (LACP), Sophie Robson, 21 from Newcastle, has had her image chosen to feature within their fifth annual Fine Art Exhibition.

The LACP is based in California, USA, and strives to strengthen photography as an artform. Just 43 artists were included from entrants from all over the world, chosen anonymously by an independent judge.

The exhibition is titled Exploring Humanity, and Sophie created her image using inspiration from the Black Lives Matter movement and conversations with the model about her experience of growing up in an all-white school.

Using digital techniques, Sophie, who is studying BA (Hons) Photography at Newcastle College University Centre, combined her original image ‘Don’t Touch My Hair’ with her photo captured during Black Lives Matter protests in Newcastle.

“I wanted to do something current with the climate of the world and the Black Lives Matter movement,” said Sophie, “I spoke with the model about the social importance of the afro and I wanted to highlight this.

“With so many entries, I didn’t expect to hear anything back until I saw that I received an honorable mention too, which was pretty exciting. Only three of the judge’s favourite images receive this.”

Ordinarily, the exhibition would have been on physical display in California, but this has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic with hopes to reschedule to a location in Europe next year.

The exhibit is showing virtually online and will run until 10 January 2021. You can view Sophie’s piece and the rest of the featured work on the LACP website and see more of Sophie’s work on her website.
