A local primary school is singing the praises of Newcastle College students, after receiving support for their music programme.

Hawthorn Primary School in Elswick was in need of storage for musical instruments and library books and contacted local construction firm KeepMoat Homes to see if they could assist.

The firm, which is currently working on a nearby development ‘The Rise’ in Scotswood, were keen to support the school by providing raw materials and enlisted the help of Newcastle College students to build the units.

A number of Site Carpentry students took part in the project and built four units during practical lessons and in their own free time at College before delivery to the school, where they now house a number of musical instruments including cellos.

The music programme at Hawthorn Primary is part of the In Harmony Newcastle Gateshead initiative, one of six national programmes which aims to inspire and transform the lives of young children through music.

Aimed specifically at those children in the West End of Newcastle, the programme is delivered by Sage Gateshead and looks to increase confidence, wellbeing, resilience and educational attainment.

Jason Howe, Head of Construction at Newcastle College said: “KeepMoat is a valued employer partner and when they approached us to take part in this project, we were eager to support it.

“We are based in the heart of a diverse and vibrant community here in the West End of Newcastle and it has always been important to Newcastle College to find ways of contributing to our local area.

“I hope that the pupils at Hawthorn Primary School find the units useful. This was a fantastic practical project for our students and they thoroughly enjoyed working on it. I hope that we can support the school more in the future.”

Geoff Scott, Social and Economic Impact Manager for Keepmoat added: “This is a great example of partnership working to support the local community, something that Keepmoat Homes are always keen to support.”
