Events Management case study

Jackie McKirdy - FdA Events Management

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle College?
I decided to study at Newcastle College as I needed a new challenge. I was a trauma nurse for 25 years but due to medical reasons I had to leave the profession. At that point I found myself looking for something new that I could focus my attention on.

What did you enjoy most about your course?
I enjoyed the event planning side. Being an older student I already had knowledge of events from my own experiences. But the course has given me the confidence to believe in myself to execute them. My greatest achievement on the course was Dine by the Tyne, a unique sky table, suspended 100 feet in the air, serving food from the best chefs in he region. The event was created as part of my course and I planned the whole thing from start to finish including budgeting and sponsorship.

What inspires you?
My children inspire me, all 6 of them. They were the ones who talked me into getting back into education. They are the reason I am here.

Has there been any guest lectures from industry?
Yes, it was really good to listen to the guest speakers such as Dave Walton from Walton Marquees. They highlighted things events planners should be aware of and it was also a great opportunity to build relationships with suppliers in the region.

How do you think your degree has set you up for employment?
The course has given me the drive to start my own company, Off the Wall. It’s in its first years but things are going really well and I look forward to growing the company.

Any words of advice for any student considering studying at Newcastle College?
Try and enjoy it, work hard and set yourself challenges.
