Tourism and Hospitality Management case study

Amy O’Neil - FdA Tourism and Hospitality Management

Why did you choose to stay at Newcastle College to study a degree?
The degree looked really interesting and I knew I’d be able to build on what I’d learnt at Level 3. I already knew the course tutors so that made the decision easier for me.

What have you enjoyed most about your degree?
I really enjoyed the HR Management module as well as the Events Management module which was very hands-on and practical. As part of my assessment I worked as part of a team to put on a carnival themed event at Blackfriars restaurant in Newcastle. All of our classmates and tutors came to support us which was great and helped calm our nerves!

Have you had the opportunity to go on a work placement as part of your Foundation degree?
I undertook a three month placement at Ellingham Hall working as a supervisor. One of my key responsibilities was to supervise bar and waiting staff at events such as weddings. I really enjoyed the placement as it helped me to develop skills such as leadership, communication as well as organisational skills, skills that are valuable in any workplace.

How has your course prepared you for employment?
The course has given me a real insight into the role of management within an organisation and what I need to do to get to that level. Management is where I see myself in the future so it’s been really useful to learn more about what it takes to be a good manager and the skills and qualities you need.

How would you describe the staff at the College?
The course tutors are amazing, some of the best I’ve ever had! They’re so supportive and are always just an email or phone call away if you need them. They’ve been really great throughout my time at the College, I couldn’t have asked for more.

What’s Newcastle like as a student city?
I live at home in Alnwick but I still make the most of the student scene in Newcastle by staying with friends. There’s so much to do whatever you’re into, great shopping and places to eat and the nightlife is unreal.

Any words of advice for any student considering studying a degree at Newcastle College?
Go for it! I’ve had a really great time studying here and I’m sure any student who comes to the College would have a similar experience. There are so many opportunities available to you as a student at the College so make sure you take advantage of them. Guest speakers from industry regularly come to the College to give lectures and they often offer work placement or internship opportunities.
