Why did you choose to study at Newcastle College?

I looked around other institutions and come to an open day at Newcastle College where I spoke to the tutor who totally sold the course to me then I auditioned! As a child I dreamt about a career in performing and in comparison to other universities this course had so much more of a practical element to it which is exactly what I was looking for.

What skills have you gained by studying this course?

I have grown in confidence due to the way in which lecturers have taught me to use my personality to own the stage. In the second year of my course I had the chance to direct and write plays and the College had theatre companies come in to recruit which was an amazing chance to network.

What are the staff like at Newcastle College?

My tutor became a mentor to me and he helped us all through the course from start to finish and the standard of teaching was fantastic. I like how the lecturers at Newcastle College aren’t just academics, they are from the industry, and this itself sold the course to me!

What are the facilities like at Newcastle College?

The Music and Performing Arts Academy is fantastic, it rivals facilities I have used in London drama schools.

What is Newcastle like as a student city?

I have been to many places, Leeds, Manchester but Newcastle has such a great vibe. It is an inexpensive city to live in and it has everything here – libraries, the Sage, Dance City and the Live Theatre. It is great for performing arts; there is so much culture and a lot going on.

Do you have any words of advice for a student considering studying at Newcastle College?

Get your head down and take the opportunity to learn. I would recommend studying a degree at college over university, the practical element of College is the best part! Doing a Foundation Degree gives you good experience which puts you in better stead to get into the drama schools further down the line in the future.

What are your future plans now you have graduated from your Foundation Degree?

I wasn’t ready for drama school two years ago however everything I have learned here has prepared me for it – audition techniques, how to be confident, working the stage and capturing the audience. I have now been chosen out of an international group of 150 young actors to join the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London for my Honours Degree.
