Solution
The Apprenticeships Team at Newcastle College worked closely with North to understand its recruitment needs, in order to provide a supportive service from start to finish. The team were also able to advise on how the levy funds could be used to help train existing members of staff to manage and support the apprentices in their roles.
A training programme for a business administration apprenticeship was developed, with flexible training options to fit the needs of the business. A rigorous recruitment process was then put in place, with Newcastle College hosting assessment days to meet and screen candidates before they progressed to an interview at North.
Although only two apprentice roles were originally planned, North ended up recruiting five apprentices due to the high quality of candidates put forward by the College.
Results
Following the successful recruitment of five apprentices, each now have individual roles within the company. With the help of Newcastle College and their mentors, the apprentices have settled into their roles and have been contributing to their teams with meaningful work which has made a real impact and added value to the business.
The apprenticeship programme has also given North colleagues the opportunity to develop as ‘people managers’ as they have taken on the roles of line management or mentor for the apprentices.
