Want to join the police? Looking to gain the right experience to give you an employment edge? This policing course is perfect if you're setting your sights on a career in the force.
Supported by Northumbria Police, we will work with you to develop a personal progression plan to help increase your chances of employment. You will also have exciting opportunities to learn from The British Transport Police
You will learn more about UK law and how it is applied, while exploring topics including policing history, the UK legal system, inter-agency collaboration, code of ethics, citizenship, diversity and inclusion.
You will also have the opportunity to undertake work experience supporting local community projects alongside NE Youth.
This is a two-year course that leads to a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Policing. You will be placed on a programme depending on your grades and you can achieve a qualification after successful completion of each year.
Level 3 Diploma in Policing
4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above
1 GCSE grade 3 in English or maths
1 GCSE grade 4 in English or maths
Level 3 Extended Diploma in Policing
6 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and maths.
What will I achieve?
This is a two-year course and you can achieve a qualification after successful completion of each year.
In year one you will receive a Level 3 NCFE Diploma in Policing.
In year two you will receive a Level 3 NCFE Extended Diploma in Policing.

Work experience opportunities
Our focus is to help you gain an insight into the police force and have the opportunity to see what working life is really like.
We offer regular guest lectures from a range of criminal justice agencies including Northumbria Police and The Met.
We also take students on visits to Northumbria Police and Newcastle’s Law Courts headquarters.
English and Maths
English and maths are vital to the work of the police force and to help your development, we embed these into your programme and practical work.
You will develop your language skills learning to write documentation and supporting evidence. Or, you may analyse patterns and statistics to solve problems and crime scene scenarios.
Where can I progress?
This course has been designed to help improve your chances of success applying to work for the Police and it also offers UCAS points.
On completion, you can apply for a Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) or progress onto a Professional Policing Degree. You will be guaranteed a place on our BSc (Hons) Professional Policing, delivered through Newcastle College University Centre.

Senior Police Officers
- Directs and co-ordinates the operation of record keeping systems and the preparation of reports.
- Establishes contacts and sources of information concerning crimes planned or committed.
- Directs and monitors the work of subordinate officers.
- Plans, directs and co-ordinates general policing for an area or functional unit.

Senior Officers in Fire, Ambulance, Prison and Related Services
- Revenue and customs, excise and immigration officers advise on the interpretation of regulations concerning taxes, duties and immigration requirements and enforce these regulations through monitoring of premises, examining goods entering the country to ensure correct duty is paid and establishing that passengers have the necessary authorisation for crossing national borders.
- Prison officers interview prisoners on arrival and discharge/departure, receive reports on disciplinary problems and decide on appropriate action, make periodic checks on internal and external security, and provide care and support to prisoners in custody.
- Ambulance officers plan, organise, direct and co-ordinate the activities of ambulance personnel and control room assistants, for the provision of ambulance services for emergency and non-emergency cases.
- Fire officers plan, direct and co-ordinate an operational plan for one or more fire stations, attend fires and other emergencies to minimise danger to property and people, arrange for the salvaging of goods, immediate temporary repairs and security measures for fire damaged premises as necessary.
- Advises on the recruitment, training and monitoring of staff.
- Prepares reports for insurance companies, the Home Office, Scottish Home and Health Department, and other bodies as necessary.
- Liaises with other senior officials and/or government departments to determine staffing, financial and other short- and long-term needs.

Police Officers (Sergeant and Below)
- Gives evidence in court cases.
- Works on station reception desk and or in communications room.
- Prepares briefs or reports for senior officers.
- Attends accidents.
- Interviews suspects, takes statements from witnesses and stops, searches and/or arrests suspects.
- Investigates complaints, crimes, accidents, any suspicious activities or other incidents.
- Directs and controls traffic or crowds at demonstrations and large public events.
- Receives instructions from senior officers and patrols an assigned area on foot, horseback, motorcycle, motor car or boat to check security and enforce regulations.

Public Services Associate Professionals
