Overview

From grassroots to elite performance, this Sports Coaching and Development course will give you the skills to lead a team to victory or reap the rewards of supporting a range of groups in the local community.
 

Alongside NE Youth, Newcastle United Foundation and Newcastle Eagles you will gain hands-on experience and expand your knowledge of sport psychology, coaching and development.
 

You will be taught by athletes who have competed on the world's stage in both the Commonwealth Games and FA leagues.
 

Previous alumni include England Cricketer Mark Wood and long-distance runner Lily Partridge.

Who the course is for

It is intended for post-16 learners who want to progress directly to employment in an assistant /coaching role.


The qualification is also suitable for those wishing to progress to higher education, where learners
would have the added advantage of using it to obtain part-time employment while studying.
 

Qualification Gained

This is a two-year programme. You will achieve a qualification after successful completion of each year.
 

In year one you will receive either a Level 3 Extended Certificate Sports Coaching and Development or Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development.


In year two you will receive either a Level 3 National Diploma in Sports Fitness and Personal Training or Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Fitness and Personal Training

Progression Opportunities

Upon successful completion of this course you will be suitable to apply for a range of sports coaching and development degrees, including our own FdSc Physical Education and Coaching.

 

Career Opportunities

The qualification is endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), which has confirmed that the qualification is fully mapped to its professional standards of ‘Assistant Coach’, 'Coach' and  ‘Safeguarding and Protecting Children’.

CIMSPA’s endorsement of this qualification allows learners to apply for CIMSPA membership after successfully completing this programme, and is therefore recognised by employers as enabling learners to enter employment in the job role of assistant coach/coach in the sports sector.

This course has two pathways:

 
Level 3 Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development (equivalent to 2 A-levels).
 

• 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above

Including:
• GCSE grade 3 in English or maths
• GCSE grade 4 in English or maths


Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development (equivalent to 3 A-levels).


• 6 GCSEs at grade 4 or above
 

Including:
• GCSE grade 3 in English or maths
• GCSE grade 4 in English or maths

Course Costs

16 to 18s

Learners are eligible for free tuition if they are aged 16-18 when beginning their studies.

If the course being applied for is a two-year qualification, you will continue to be eligible for free tuition for the remainder of the course.

If the course being applied for is two separate one-year qualifications and you begin studying year one of the course aged 18, you will be required to pay fees for the second year.

Please note, if you are applying from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland you may be subject to different funding rules than students who live in England.
